Who are Random House?

The Random House Group is one of the largest general book publishing companies in the UK. The group is based in London with subsidiary companies in Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa. The Random House Group comprises four publishing companies with 36 diverse imprints. Each imprint is highly individual with its own culture and values and a commitment to publishing the best books in its particular area.

Whose work do you publish?

Novelists published by the Group include Martin Amis, Dan Brown, Jilly Cooper, J M Coetzee, Sebastian Faulks, John Grisham, Mark Haddon, Robert Harris, Joanne Harris, Ian McEwan, Terry Pratchett, Kathy Reichs, Ruth Rendell, Salman Rushdie, Joanne Trollope and Irvine Welsh.

In non-fiction, the lists range from broad general non-fiction to a number of specialist non-fiction categories such as cookery, gardening including the renowned Expert Books series and Eden Project Books, business books and travel including Fodor's Guides. The Group has publishing partnerships with Time Out, Channel 4 and Mainstream and has recently acquired the majority shareholding in BBC Books and Virgin Books Ltd. Notable authors of non-fiction include Bill Bryson, Nigella Lawson and Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray (authors of The River Café cookbooks). The Group's classic backlist of over 6000 titles includes the works of Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene, Iris Murdoch, Virginia Woolf and Anthony Powell amongst others.

Random House Children's Books publish many bestselling children's writers including Anthony Brown, Malorie Blackman, Roald Dahl, Phillip Pullman and Jacqueline Wilson the fourth, and current Children's Laureate. The Group publishes the previous three Children's Laureates: Quentin Blake, Anne Fine and Michael Morpurgo.

How do you distribute your books?

In the UK, the Random House Group runs a distribution business that services its own imprints as well as 50 other UK publishers. The Random House Group has three distribution sites, at Grantham, Wellingborough and at Frating where the warehouse, built in 1998, is the largest purpose-built book distribution centre in the UK.

Are you related to Random House in New York?

Yes and no. We share the same name and owner as Random House Inc. in the US, but we don't necessarily publish the same books. We are independent companies and while we work together on many projects, we also have our own unique publishing lists. As a result, a book which is available on rBooks may not be available on the Random House Inc. site and vice versa.
